Marsascala

The Location

Marsascala may not be one of the better-known towns in Malta, but it is certainly one of the most up-and-coming. Located in the south of the island, this once-sleepy fishing village is now dynamic and vibrant, with all sorts of facilities to please its local and foreign residents.

The town is built around Marsascala Bay, a pretty inlet that welcomes fishing boats – and some stunning yachts – into its harbour. Life here revolves around this bay, with a good number of top-quality restaurants and bars, as well as playing areas for children and a pretty promenade that’s perfect for evening strolls during the summer months.

Of course, it is its proximity to the sea that has made Marsascala so popular in recent years. However, it is a good spot to base yourself in if you want to explore other parts of the Maltese south, including Marsaxlokk, Ghaxaq and the Three Cities, as these are all just a stone’s throw away. The airport, meanwhile, is a short 10-minute drive from the town, making this an excellent base for those who fly in and out of the island on a regular basis.

The Lifestyle

Life in Marsascala is far more traditional than in other parts of the island. Here you’ll find that most of your neighbours will be local, and that life takes on a more leisurely pace than in many of the more cosmopolitan spots. And that’s exactly why many people love it so much.

The south is Malta’s most rural location, so it attracts residents who enjoy making the most of the great outdoors. You’ll find that there is no end of countryside trails to explore on a walk or hike, or little bays that are perfect for kayaking or rock climbing. Swimming is also a highlight, as some of the cleanest beaches in the country are found here. This includes the famous St Thomas Bay, which is the ideal spot for paddling, sun bathing and snorkeling, while taking in the views of the unspoilt surroundings.

History buffs are also attracted to this part of the island, and it is very rich in authenticity and heritage. After all, the south is home to Malta’s famous prehistoric temples – stone structures that date back over 7,000 years, as well as the remarkable underground Hypogeum burial site. Visitors travel from all over the world to see it!

Finally, though, it is the friendliness and relaxed nature of Marsascala that have attracted so many expat residents in recent years. They love the little restaurants, al fresco cafés, busy bars and the plethora of activities held here – including the dynamic annual village festa. Marsascala is a fabulous representation of what life in Malta and the Mediterranean can truly be like.

The Properties

One of Marsascala’s greatest charms is that it is home to a huge variety of properties, so you can really find the perfect one for you.

Marsascala Bay, in the centre of the town, is lined with seafront apartments and houses, all of which enjoy beautiful views. Further into the area you’ll find traditional houses of character with unique features, as well as sprawling seafront villas, most of which have large pools, gardens and garages.

More recently, Marsascala also became home to the Ta’ Monita Residence, which is one of the island’s Special Designated Areas. This luxury development really does set new standards for the region, with a range of studio, 1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments and penthouses, a large communal swimming pool, a piazza and convenient underground parking.
