Sliema seafront is one of the most in-demand locations in Malta – and it’s easy to see why.
Once a quiet seaside town that welcomed the wealthy for summertime seafront living, it is now an energetic cosmopolitan town that has attracted thousands of residents thanks to its gorgeous setting and ample amenities.
Sliema is set on the stretch of coastline between Ta’ Xbiex and St Julian’s. This makes it very central, with convenient transport connections to the rest of the island and easy links to the north, south and the airport. The views are also stunning – most apartment blocks look out onto the open sea or across to the beautiful Valletta bastions, and are equally enjoyed from the seafront restaurants and cafés that dot the promenade.
Life in Sliema is fast-paced, friendly and dynamic, with plenty to offer families, couples and professionals moving to the area.
Life here revolves around the long promenade that weaves around the coast from Ta Xbiex to St Julian’s. This pretty 8.5km stretch is very popular with walkers and joggers, many of whom spend their evenings exercising here, or simply taking a stroll to soak up the atmosphere.
Sliema has attracted lots of young families and, as a result, there are plenty of facilities. For instance, The Point Shopping Mall has a large indoor play area, which keeps children occupied in all weathers whereas the Piazza is ideal to let your kids run whilst you drink a coffee or have a bit to eat. Other Outdoor pursuits are also on offer, and there are several large play areas on the promenade, with activities suited to all ages.
Couples and professionals will likely be drawn to Sliema’s famous ‘café culture’, as well as the many commercial amenities. The centre of Sliema is known by locals as ‘the Front’. Here you can see across to Valletta, and many boat excursions leave here daily exploring the islands’ coast.
It’s a major meeting point – friends gather for coffee and a walk in the morning, business people make use of the top-quality restaurants for meetings, and pretty much everyone comes to Sliema for the array of designer and high street shops on offer; it’s definitely Malta’s commercial capital. Sliema is also the home for many office buildings where a majority of foreign companies including financial consultancies, Banks, iGaming companies, and software businesses have set up and relocated.
Of course, there is tranquility to be enjoyed here too. Although busy, Sliema is home to some of the island’s best rocky beaches, with easy access into the gorgeous clear waters. In fact, many residents choose their seafront apartments based on their proximity to the sea. After all, what could be better than enjoying your morning coffee on your terrace overlooking the Mediterranean, and then taking a short walk across the road to dive right into it? This is exactly the sort of lifestyle that Sliema promises.
Sliema has a variety of properties on offer. Along the seafront itself you will predominantly find smart high-rise apartment blocks, with spacious layouts and – often – open views of the sea. As Sliema is one of the island’s most luxurious settings, these blocks are usually finished to the highest standards, with excellent facilities including underground parking and lifts.
Further inland, a number of traditional Sliema townhouses do still sit on the quieter streets, although they have become quite hard to come by. These houses are usually typical of the island, with Maltese balconies and small gardens. If you can get your hands on one, then they make for a fantastic investment – a fact that is actually true of all real estate in the very popular town of Sliema.
